How does the toll road system work in Italy?

If you travel to Le Marche you are likely to encounter toll roads.

A toll road is a road for which you have to pay 'toll' to drive. You can recognise a toll road by the signs saying 'Autostrada a pedaggio'

It works as follows in the standard way;

At the entrance to the toll road, you take a ticket, which you return at the end of the journey. The toll is calculated based on the distance you have travelled.

How the toll road system works in Italy

How you pay the toll road depends on the gate or lock.

Choosing the right toll gate is very important.

various autostrada toll booths

Telepass: You can use this gate if you have a toll badge fitted in the car. (Orderable from the ANWB) Many Italians use this system to be charged automatically. As a holidaymaker, there is no need to buy it. But can be handy in high season when long drives are in front of the other gates.

Carte: the gate where the blue sign 'Carte' hangs above you drive in if you pay by credit card.

Cash: the gate with a white sign with paper and coins you take if you want to pay cash. Sometimes you can also pay with a bank card here. However, it is far from always possible to pay with a Dutch debit card here. We therefore recommend having enough cash in your pocket just in case.

Cash by hand the gate holding a white sign with money in it. Here, an employee sits behind the counter. We recommend this gate. It is the easiest way for Dutch people to pay tolls.
