To the market in Italy

The nicest market near us

Senigallia: Thursday morning 7.30 am - 1 pm

Fano: Saturday morning 7.30 am - 1 pm

There are plenty of opportunities to visit a market in Le Marche. Do you also enjoy visiting a local market during your holidays? Then you're in luck! You don't have to go far to do so. Senigallia has one of the largest weekly markets in the region.

Most of the stalls are displayed under the galleries of the Portici Ercolani. In the shade and nice and cool. But you will also find local products and a wide range of fashion and accessories in the squares and old streets of the city centre.

Weekly markets in small villages often have a handful of stalls. Always great fun to take a look too. In this blog, however, we will stick to the 2 bigger markets we like to visit ourselves

The weekly market in Senigallia - every Thursday morning

Fano's weekly market

On Saturday mornings, there is a market in Fano. A market we personally recommend! What makes this market so special? The surprising mix of affordable clothes you'll come across at a market, but especially stylish boutique fashion, beautiful shoes, including more expensive brands you wouldn't immediately expect at the market. You will also come across many stalls selling colourful vegetables and fresh fruit, as well as local delicacies. It is exactly that kind of unexpected find that makes an Italian market so much fun.

Important tip: with food items, make sure not to touch or squeeze them without asking the seller first. This is not appreciated. If you say what you need, the seller will already select the best vegetables or fruits for you himself. And, prefer to take some cash with you. You can't use ATMs everywhere.

Fano: Sassonia sotto stelle: every weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 7pm to midnight. Throughout the summer, the market under the stars takes place. During a friendly market, you can meet artisans and artists and their creations.

Senigallia:Fiera di Sant'Agostino From 27 to 31 August, a big night market from 6pm to midnight.

The Fiera di Sant'Agostino is an age-old tradition.

This cosy 4-day market is a reminder of the very old and famous market and fair that dates back as far as the 14the century took place in Senigallia. The canopies along the river Misa are evidence of this. Previously, they hung large light brown tarpaulins at first-floor level above the streets. It looked like a Mediterranean Bazaar. As trade was not limited to the 'Fiera' in August, it was decided to build permanent porticoes for the merchants and their wares.

The construction of the Portici Ercolani in Senigallia thus brought even more business and trade to the seaside town. People came to the coastal town from far and wide to buy and sell merchandise. But also for the big fair held in Senigallia.

The peasant population from the hills of Le Marche had a lot to offer during the Fiera di Sant'Agostino make the long journey to the market. Sometimes they travelled as much as 30 or 40 kilometres on foot, or by horse and cart, to be there. It was not only an opportunity to trade, but also a social reunion and a moment of meeting. A gathering that people looked forward to for a long time and was a beloved tradition for many - year after year. I

Italians and traditions. They belong together. Nowadays people still come from far and wide to the Fiera di Sant' Agostino in Senigallia. But these days by car and the journey is manageable.

Senigallia hosts many different markets and events throughout the summer. From artistic to artisanal. From music to tastings. Too many to mention. You can find all the information at www.feelsenigallia.it and you can download the whole calendar from day to day here.
